Emergency repair of a fractured dowelretained precision attachment for a RPD

Precision attachments soldered to a dowel and core, such as the Dalbo attachment (Cendres & Métaux SA, Biel-Bienne, Switzerland), significantly enhance the retention of removable partial dentures (RPDs). This is particularly the case when long spans are to be restored and conventional retentive factors are absent.
Fracture of the dowel (and loss of core cementation) associated with mechanical failure, or loss of stability caused by recurrent caries, leads to loss of retention of the prosthesis1. Removal of caries can adversely affect the short-term stability of the recemented core. Immediate attention to this problem is required to alleviate the functional and esthetic distress experienced by the patient. A simple technique to overcome this difficulty is described.
