RICHMOND S. HAYES patented the first articulator with descending condylar paths in 1889. In that same year, Hayes introduced the first example of a functional facebow-like device intended for locating the position of the casts correctly in the articulator. He named this device the “articulating caliper,” however, there is no evidence that it was ever patented . Hayes recognized the necessity of mounting condyle oriented casts in the articulator by taking measurements from the patient. This instrument was the first on record to be used for that purpose.
