AS EARLY AS the 1840s, some form of “vertical stop” was a common component of mechanical articulators. Clearly, some early inventors recognized the importance of preserving the vertical relationship of the casts in the articulator and provided this feature. A notable “holdout” was William G.A. Bonwill, who believed that such a device would interfere with the accurate function of an articulator.
